Why visit Tamnougalt?

With origins probably dating back to the 16th century, the ksar of Tamnougalt stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Drâa Valley, just south of Agdz. Once the capital of the Mezguita tribe and the residence of the caïds who governed the region, it occupied a strategic position on the trans-Saharan caravan routes between Marrakech and Timbuktu.

Surrounded by rammed-earth walls pierced by four gates, the ksar is crossed by a maze of narrow lanes, some of them covered, leading between houses with slender towers and walls decorated with geometric motifs. Its architecture reflects a shared tradition of craftsmanship: Amazigh, Arab and Jewish communities lived here side by side for generations, until the Jewish departures of the 1950s and 1960s.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Tamnougalt was governed by Caïd Si Ali, the last major representative of a line of Mezguita caïds linked to the Makhzen, Morocco’s central authority. From his kasbah overlooking the palm grove, he exercised authority over the oasis and its routes. In 1930, he received a French mission sent to survey the region. Local accounts also remember him as loyal to the Sultan and opposed to the growing power of Thami El Glaoui.

On a neighbouring rocky outcrop, the kasbah of the caïds still dominates the surrounding landscape. Largely abandoned and damaged, it nevertheless preserves some remarkable decorative features, including painted wooden ceilings and carved plasterwork, evidence of the refinement of its former occupants.

Less visited than Aït Ben Haddou and still more closely connected to local life than many ksour in the region, Tamnougalt offers a rare insight into the political and commercial history of southern Morocco.

What to do in Tamnougalt?

Explore the lanes of the ksar

The fortified village is best explored on foot, between earthen houses that are still inhabited and others that have long been abandoned. The main gate opens onto a square beside the marabout of Sidi Abdellah ben Ali, a useful landmark when finding your way through the maze of covered lanes.

The ksar is extensive and its narrow passages can be confusing. A local guide can help reveal its history and social organisation — aspects that are not always apparent at first sight.

Visit the kasbah of the caïds

Built of rammed earth on three levels arranged around a central courtyard, the Mezguita kasbah reflects an architectural style associated with the great caïdal families of southern Morocco and bears similarities to the kasbahs built by the Glaoui.

Part of the site has been restored and now displays agricultural tools and objects from everyday life.

Some rooms remain fragile or closed to visitors, so it is advisable to enquire locally before exploring them.

Walk through the palm grove and along the Drâa River

The ksar overlooks the Drâa River and a vast palm grove still crossed by seguias, the traditional irrigation channels that carry water through the oasis.

Walking among gardens of date palms, henna and fig trees helps reveal the close relationship between the fortified settlement and the agricultural landscape that sustained it.

Date cooperatives can also be visited in the Agdz palm grove.

Visit the weekly souk in Agdz

Every Thursday, the souk in Agdz brings together traders and residents from the surrounding villages for a lively market selling vegetables, spices, textiles, household goods and livestock.

Only a few kilometres from Tamnougalt, it offers an interesting glimpse of everyday life in the valley and makes a good complement to a visit to the ksar.

Follow the traces of Jewish memory

At the heart of the Drâa Valley, Tamnougalt was long an important crossroads between the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara and the oases of southern Morocco. A Jewish community lived within an area identified as the mellah and was closely involved in the economic life of the ksar. Its members took part in local trade, craftsmanship and the caravan networks connecting Morocco with sub-Saharan Africa.

Their earthen houses were built using the same forms and techniques as the rest of Tamnougalt. In 1934, a survey still recorded around fifty Jewish households in Tamnougalt and the neighbouring village of Asselim n’Izder. The decline of the caravan routes, followed by the departures of the 1950s and 1960s, brought this centuries-old presence to an end.

The remains of the mellah still evoke this long history of coexistence and exchange. During a visit, it is possible to see:

• the covered lanes and houses, many now abandoned or badly deteriorated;
• the layout of the former Jewish quarter within the ksar;
• remains traditionally identified as those of the synagogue;
• and, more broadly, the earthen architecture of Tamnougalt.

How to get to Tamnougalt?

From Ouarzazate

Tamnougalt lies around 70 km south of Ouarzazate. Follow the N9 towards Zagora, crossing the Tizi n’Tinififft pass before descending towards Agdz and the Drâa Valley.

The drive takes around 1 hour 15 minutes. From Agdz, a secondary road of about 6 km leads across the Drâa to the ksar.

It is also possible to reach Agdz by bus or shared taxi and complete the journey to Tamnougalt by local taxi.

From Marrakech

From Marrakech, allow around 5½ to 6 hours by road, travelling over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Ouarzazate before continuing south on the N9 towards Agdz and Tamnougalt.

Getting around

The ksar itself is explored entirely on foot. A vehicle is useful, however, for reaching Tamnougalt from Agdz and for exploring the surrounding Drâa Valley.

The palm grove is extensive and its paths can be confusing, so a local guide can be useful. Cycling is also an excellent way to explore the oasis.

Where to stay in Tamnougalt?

Spending a night in Tamnougalt changes the way the ksar is experienced. In the early morning or at sunset, the light falling across the earthen ramparts and palm grove is very different from the harsh light of the middle of the day.

A few accommodation options can be found within the ksar itself, where local families have restored old houses as guesthouses. In Agdz, only a few minutes away by road, there are also small guesthouses and riads, many run by families from the valley.

Simple campsites can also be found around the palm grove for travellers with tents or campervans.

Beyond Tamnougalt

Tamnougalt is only one stage in a journey through the Drâa Valley and its long ribbon of palm groves.

Heading back towards Ouarzazate, the oases of Skoura and Fint reveal other expressions of oasis life and earthen architecture. Continuing south leads to Zagora and then towards the desert landscapes beyond. On the road towards M’Hamid, the pottery village of Tamegroute is another essential stop.

Every year in early October, the Moussem Ellama brings together neighbouring villages around Tamnougalt for a celebration that is both cultural and religious — a particularly interesting time to experience the valley at its liveliest.

With a Moroccan guide, Tamnougalt can also be combined with visits to other ksour in the Drâa Valley for a full day, or longer, exploring the oasis cultures of South-East Morocco.

Why visit Tamegroute?

Tamegroute occupies a distinctive position in the Drâa Valley. Located south of Zagora, on the road towards M’Hamid El Ghizlane and the Sahara, it was long associated with caravan traffic, spiritual exchange and religious learning.

Today, the village is known above all for two things. The first is its green pottery, one of the most recognisable crafts of southern Morocco. Bowls, dishes, cups, vases and tiles bear the deep, sometimes uneven green glaze for which Tamegroute is famous.

The second is the Zaouia Naciria, an important Sufi institution whose library holds a remarkable collection of ancient manuscripts. These works bear witness to a time when the Drâa Valley was connected to the great centres of Islamic learning, from the Maghreb to the Mashreq.

Tamegroute was therefore far more than a village of craftsmen. It was also a place of passage, hospitality and influence. Standing on the old caravan route, it welcomed merchants, pilgrims, students, scholars and travellers from many different horizons.

The very name Tamegroute recalls this role as a place of passage. According to a commonly cited interpretation, the name is of Amazigh origin and refers to a place one visits, passes through or stops at. By extension, Tamegroute came to be regarded as one of the last inhabited stopping points before the desert — a place to rest before or after the crossing.

To visit Tamegroute is to discover this dual heritage: that of the craftsman’s hand and that of written memory.

What to do in Tamegroute?

Discover the pottery workshops and their craftsmen

The pottery workshops offer the most accessible and visually engaging introduction to Tamegroute. Visitors can observe the different stages of production: preparing the clay, throwing the pieces on the wheel, drying, glazing and finally firing them in traditional kilns.

Tamegroute pottery is instantly recognisable by its green glaze. The colour is never entirely uniform. It varies from one piece to another according to the firing and the effects of the glaze. This irregularity is part of its appeal: every object bears the marks of both fire and hand.

Most of the pieces are objects for everyday use: bowls, plates, serving dishes, cups, jars, vases and tiles. Smaller pieces are easier to carry and often make more practical souvenirs than large dishes or fragile vases.

Local tradition also links this pottery to influences from Fez. Tamegroute’s craft is said to have been enriched by techniques brought by craftsmen from the imperial city, at a time when the Zaouia Naciria attracted scholars, travellers and skilled artisans. Passed down through families of potters, this tradition of green-glazed ceramics gradually became one of the village’s most recognisable signatures.

Beyond the possibility of buying a piece, much of the interest lies in simply watching the potters at work. Tamegroute reminds us that craftsmanship is not merely the production of decorative objects. It is also a way of passing on a material, a technique, a family memory and a relationship with the land.

Some workshops and local operators also offer introductions to pottery making. Depending on the workshop, this may involve simply trying the basic gestures, taking part in a session guided by a potter, or joining a longer course in which participants work the clay, shape a piece and sometimes learn basic decoration techniques. Duration, prices and arrangements vary, so it is worth enquiring in advance if you would like to practise the craft rather than simply observe it.

Visit the library of the Zaouia Naciria

The library of the Zaouia Naciria is the other major reason to stop in Tamegroute. It houses several thousand ancient manuscripts covering not only religion, but also law, medicine, astronomy, science and scholarly literature.

It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a manuscript library rather than simply a Quranic library. The Quran and religious sciences naturally occupy an important place in the collection, but its significance extends far beyond them. The library bears witness to a broad written culture engaged with the knowledge of its time.

The Zaouia Naciria was founded in the sixteenth century, in 1575, by Abu Hafs Omar Ben Ahmed El Ansari. It later acquired its name and much of its influence through M’hammad Ben Nacer, a major seventeenth-century Sufi figure. Under his leadership, the zaouia became one of the principal spiritual centres of southern Morocco.

A library was later established there in the seventeenth century by Ahmed Naciri. It helped extend Tamegroute’s influence far beyond the Drâa Valley, attracting scholars, ulema and students who came to consult, copy and transmit valuable works.

Visiting the library nevertheless requires a little practical preparation. Access depends on the zaouia’s opening hours, the presence of the custodian and local circumstances. It is advisable to check before travelling or to visit with someone familiar with the customs of the place.

Photography of the manuscripts may be prohibited or restricted. As in any religious site, respectful dress and discreet behaviour are recommended.

Understand the role of a zaouia

For visitors unfamiliar with the term, zaouia deserves some explanation. It comes from the Arabic zawiya, originally meaning a “corner” or “angle”, and later came to refer in the Maghreb to a religious institution associated with teaching, hospitality and spiritual life.

In Morocco, zaouias developed over the centuries and played a profound role in the social organisation of towns, oases and tribal communities. A zaouia was therefore much more than a place of prayer. It could include a mosque, a school, a library and accommodation for students, travellers or pilgrims, as well as agricultural or commercial property whose income helped support the institution.

Some zaouias also played an important economic and political role. In regions such as the Souss and the southern valleys, they could act as mediators between tribes, centres of religious authority, places of protection and sometimes as genuine counterweights to central power.

This is the context in which the Zaouia Naciria of Tamegroute should be understood. It was not an isolated monument but a living institution: a place of prayer, teaching, hospitality, transmission and influence at the heart of the Drâa Valley.

Walk through the earthen alleyways

Beyond the workshops and the library, Tamegroute is also worth exploring on foot. Its narrow lanes reveal the earthen architecture characteristic of villages throughout the Drâa Valley: thick walls, confined passageways, deep shade and simple forms.

This is not an open-air museum but a living village. Visitors should therefore walk discreetly, avoid photographing residents without permission and take the time to observe the relationship between architecture, light and material.

Earth-coloured walls, old buildings, shaded passages and simple volumes create an atmosphere very different from that of the region’s major tourist sites. Tamegroute rewards patient attention rather than a hurried glance.

Stop at the Tinfou dunes

A few kilometres south of Tamegroute, the Tinfou dunes offer a first encounter with a true dune landscape. They do not have the scale of the great ergs around M’Hamid or Merzouga, but they can make an enjoyable stop for travellers who are not continuing farther into the desert.

The appeal of Tinfou is above all symbolic: here, the transition between the inhabited Drâa Valley and the more open landscapes of the pre-Sahara becomes tangible.

How to get to Tamegroute?

From Ouarzazate

From Ouarzazate, take the N9 national road towards Agdz, then continue through the Drâa Valley to Zagora. Tamegroute lies farther south, on the road towards M’Hamid El Ghizlane.

The journey takes around three hours from Ouarzazate, longer if you stop in Agdz, along the Drâa palm groves or in Zagora. Tamegroute is therefore best included in a full-day excursion or as part of a longer journey through the south.

From Zagora

From Zagora, Tamegroute is an easy excursion. The road is paved and follows the main route towards M’Hamid. The drive takes around twenty to thirty minutes.

For those staying in Zagora, the visit can easily be made in the morning: leave early, visit the pottery workshops, see the library if it is open, then return to Zagora or continue south towards Tinfou and M’Hamid.

Visiting with a local guide

A local guide can be useful, particularly for visiting the library and understanding the wider context of the Zaouia Naciria. The pottery workshops are easier to explore independently, although a knowledgeable guide can provide a deeper understanding of the techniques, kilns, glazing and family organisation behind the craft.

A guide is not essential, but can enrich the visit, particularly when it comes to understanding the role of the zaouia and the organisation of the pottery workshops.

Beyond Tamegroute

Tamegroute fits naturally into a longer journey through the Drâa Valley. From Ouarzazate, the road passes through Agdz, the Drâa palm groves and Zagora before reaching the increasingly open landscapes of the south.

Beyond Tamegroute, you can continue to the Tinfou dunes and then towards M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the last major settlement before the Saharan tracks and Erg Chigaga. In the opposite direction, a visit to Tamegroute can be combined with Zagora, Amezrou and the villages of the Drâa Valley.

Tamegroute is therefore an ideal stop for adding cultural depth to a journey towards the desert. It reminds us that the road south is not merely a road through remarkable landscapes. It is also a route shaped by knowledge, Sufi traditions, craftsmanship and centuries of memory.

Why visit Fint Oasis?

Discover an oasis emerging from a mineral landscape

The approach is one of the most striking moments of the visit. From the plateau, there is little to suggest that an oasis lies ahead. The road crosses expanses of dark rock and arid hills before suddenly overlooking a valley filled with palm trees, gardens and earthen houses.

A frequently repeated local interpretation links the name Fint to the Amazigh expression n’Fint, understood to mean “hidden”. Although this etymology would require firmer linguistic confirmation, it perfectly captures the impression created by the landscape: a valley concealed from view until the very last moments of the approach.

Walk through a living oasis

Unlike a garden laid out for visitors, Fint remains a place where people live and work. Paths wind between small cultivated plots, date palms, fruit trees, vegetable gardens and the houses of the different villages.

Irrigation depends on the circulation and sharing of scarce water resources. Agriculture is mainly geared towards local needs, with dates, figs, grapes, cereals, vegetables and fodder crops grown according to the plot, the season and the amount of water available.

Slow down just a few kilometres from Ouarzazate

Its proximity to Ouarzazate means Fint can easily be visited in half a day without organising a long excursion. Yet the oasis feels isolated enough to offer an immediate break from the city.

Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, Fint is best suited to a slow walk, a locally prepared lunch or a few hours spent beneath the palm trees. It is particularly rewarding for travellers who want to understand a place rather than simply tick off sights.

Understanding Fint Oasis

A valley made up of four villages

Fint is not a single village but a group of four douars spread along the wadi. Their names appear with different spellings depending on the transcription: Wangarf, Taherbilte or Taharbilt, Timoula and Belghizi or Balghizi.

This linear settlement pattern is directly shaped by the geography of the valley. Houses are grouped on slightly higher ground, while the gardens occupy areas closer to the water. The result is a narrow oasis stretching over several kilometres rather than one vast, continuous palm grove.

A history preserved through oral memory

With relatively little written documentation available, much of Fint’s history has been passed down through family stories. Testimonies collected from Lhaj Elhassane Aghlane recall the gradual arrival of families from the Drâa Valley, the Tata region and other parts of south-eastern Morocco, driven by drought, epidemics, famine or tensions between tribes.

According to this local memory, the earliest dwellings were established on the rocky slope of Tassegdelte, high enough to offer protection from flooding along the wadi. Remains of old buildings and dwellings sometimes described as troglodytic are still reported around the oasis, although their precise identification and present condition deserve further verification on site.

The accounts also describe Fint as a Black Amazigh community formed through successive migrations and deeply rooted in the valley. This history should not be used to reduce its inhabitants to a fixed category: it belongs to the particular social memory of Black communities in southern Morocco and to the many human movements that have shaped the country’s oases.

Fint under Glaoua authority

During the period of caïdal rule and later the French Protectorate, Fint lay within the Glaoua sphere of influence. Local elders recall two amghars, based in Taherbilte and Timoula, who acted as intermediaries for Glaoua authority.

Lhaj Elhassane Aghlane’s testimony describes levies, confiscations and forced labour imposed on local families. Men and boys could be called upon to plough fields, help with harvests or work on buildings belonging to Glaoua representatives based in places such as the kasbahs of Taourirt and Tifoultoute.

This history reminds us that the peaceful appearance of the oasis also conceals a past marked by unequal power relations. Some inhabitants once worked as khammès — sharecroppers traditionally paid one fifth of the harvest — on land held by neighbouring groups.

A once more diverse society

The memories collected in Fint also mention the former presence of several Jewish families, at a time when Jewish communities lived in many villages around Ouarzazate. They were particularly involved in trade and in exchanges connecting the oases with neighbouring market towns.

Little trace of this presence is visible in the landscape today. Yet it shows that despite its apparent isolation, Fint was part of the wider economic, social and religious networks of southern Morocco.

Water: the source and fragility of the oasis

Life in Fint depends entirely on the wadi and the water flows that feed its gardens. During favourable periods, water runs through the irrigation channels, cultivation resumes and vegetation spreads across the plots. During prolonged droughts, cultivated areas shrink and some families have to seek additional sources of income elsewhere.

The elders’ accounts contrast years of hardship with times of abundance, when gardens flourished, livestock prospered and the inhabitants gathered to celebrate the moussem of Sidi M’hend Ou Moussa. This festival combined a religious ceremony, a shared meal and an opportunity to renew ties with other communities in the region.

What to see at Fint Oasis?

Take in the oasis from above

Before descending into the valley, take a moment to stop and look. From above, the structure of Fint becomes immediately clear: a narrow ribbon of vegetation follows the wadi, while villages and gardens occupy the available ground between the water and the rocky slopes.

Morning light and late afternoon are particularly good times to appreciate the contrast between the palm trees, dark hills and earthen houses.

Walk among the gardens

The best way to discover Fint is on foot. Several paths connect the villages, either following the wadi or passing between cultivated plots. A two- or three-hour walk is already enough to observe the crops, irrigation systems, bread ovens, earthen walls and different layers of vegetation.

There is not always continuous signposting. A resident or local guide can help you find the most interesting paths while avoiding accidentally entering private fields.

Look for traces of the old settlement

On the higher ground, traces of older buildings survive and are associated in local memory with the community’s earliest settlements. Some cavities and ruins are sometimes described as former troglodytic dwellings.

These areas have not been restored and are not systematically secured. They should be approached with caution, without climbing on earthen walls or entering weakened structures.

Understand Fint’s connection with cinema

Its proximity to Ouarzazate has also given Fint a place in the region’s film history. The oasis and surrounding landscapes have been used as locations, including for scenes associated with Lawrence of Arabia and Prince of Persia. Oasis Studios Morocco, a production complex, was also established in 2016 on the heights near the oasis.

This cinematic aspect remains secondary to the experience of visiting Fint. Unlike the large studios and purpose-built sets around Ouarzazate, the oasis is first and foremost worth discovering for its landscape, agriculture and villages.

Visit Fint with respect for the oasis

Fint is an inhabited and cultivated landscape, not a tourist park. Paths may pass alongside houses and workplaces or close to local residents going about their daily activities.

A few simple principles should therefore be respected:

• ask permission before photographing people or the inside of a house;
• stay on the paths and do not walk through cultivated plots;
• do not pick fruit unless invited to do so;
• take care not to damage irrigation channels or small water structures;
• take your rubbish away with you;
• avoid treating water areas as swimming spots;
• agree clearly on the price before accepting a guided visit, meal or other service.

Meeting local people can be one of the most rewarding aspects of a visit to Fint, but these encounters should always be based on clarity and respect, without treating everyday life as a spectacle.

How to get to Fint Oasis?

From Ouarzazate

From central Ouarzazate, head towards Tarmigt on the southern bank of the wadi, then follow the direction of Zaouit Sidi Othmane and the signs towards Fint. Routes suggested by navigation apps may vary and the condition of some tracks can change, so it is sensible to check the road before leaving the built-up areas.

The final kilometres cross a stony landscape before descending towards the oasis. Drive slowly, particularly in a low-clearance vehicle. The total journey generally takes between 30 and 45 minutes.

By taxi or private driver

Booking a taxi from Ouarzazate is the simplest option for visitors without their own vehicle. Agree in advance on:

• the total price;
• waiting time;
• where you will meet for the return journey;
• whether a guide or lunch is included.

It is not advisable to travel to Fint without arranging your return journey, as taxis are not guaranteed to be available in the oasis.

By bicycle

Fint can also be reached by mountain bike from Ouarzazate. The return trip covers around 30 kilometres depending on the route, with stony sections and considerable exposure to the sun. A reasonable level of fitness, plenty of water and a suitable bicycle are essential. Guided cycling excursions are also available from Ouarzazate.

Where to stay in Fint?

A small number of guesthouses and inns welcome visitors in the oasis or near the villages. When arranged in advance, it may also be possible to have lunch in a local family home.

Accommodation options remain limited and can vary with the seasons. If you plan to stay overnight, it is best to book ahead and check:

• access to the property;
• whether dinner is available;
• hot water and heating in winter;
• payment arrangements;
• return transport.

Spending a night in Fint offers the chance to experience the oasis after the day visitors have left, when the light fades across the surrounding hills and daily life continues around the houses and gardens. Travellers looking for more comfort and a wider choice of accommodation may prefer to stay in Ouarzazate and visit Fint during the day.

Fint fits naturally into a day spent exploring Ouarzazate. A visit can be combined with the Kasbah of Taourirt, the Cinema Museum or a walk through the city’s older neighbourhoods.

A balanced itinerary is to explore Ouarzazate in the morning before heading to Fint for a walk and lunch. During hotter periods, reversing the order is preferable so you can enjoy the cooler morning temperatures in the oasis.

The Atlas film studios in Ouarzazate, the old sets built around the city and the landscapes near Fint all reflect the importance cinema has acquired in both the economy and the image of the region.

Fint should not, however, be reduced to a natural film set. Its place within the wider territory, its memories and its agriculture deserve far more attention than a simple list of films shot there.

Why visit Skoura?

Skoura palm grove ranks among the most beautiful oases in southern Morocco. Across more than 25 km², thousands of date palms, olive trees, almond trees and pomegranate trees compose a verdant landscape that stands in striking contrast to the arid terrain surrounding it. Water flowing through an age-old network of channels has sustained fertile gardens at the heart of a desert environment for centuries.

But Skoura is more than its vegetation. Towering earthen kasbahs emerge from among the palm trees, bearing witness to the oasis’s former prosperity. The most celebrated is Kasbah Amridil, one of the iconic monuments of southern Morocco — though several other fortresses are equally worthy of attention for their architecture and their stories.

Skoura is also a place of encounters and memory. Amazigh, Arab and Jewish communities lived side by side here for generations, leaving their mark in the architecture, the craft traditions, the local customs and in certain places that remain visible to this day.

Between irrigated gardens, architectural heritage and layered cultural histories, Skoura palm grove offers one of the richest and most authentic discoveries in the Ouarzazate region.

What to do in the Skoura palm grove?

Walking through the palm grove

The tracks that wind through the oasis invite you to discover its gardens, irrigation channels and small villages scattered among the palms — as well as earthen kasbahs, most of them long abandoned and slowly returning to the earth. A walk on foot or by bicycle is the finest way to take in the gentle atmosphere of the place.

Skoura’s palm grove is vast and can feel like a true labyrinth. A local guide is invaluable for finding its most rewarding kasbahs, gardens and hidden paths.

Visiting Kasbah Amridil

Probably the most famous kasbah in the oasis — once depicted on the 50-dirham banknote — Kasbah Amridil is well preserved and offers a clear window onto traditional earthen architecture and the domestic life of Skoura’s former great families.

Exploring Skoura’s weekly souk

From the early hours of the morning, merchants and customers converge from surrounding villages — Toundoute, Imi N’Oulaoune and beyond — to trade a wealth of goods: fruit, vegetables, spices, textiles, local crafts and livestock. The market offers genuine immersion in daily local life and a culturally rich experience.

Traditional irrigation systems

Water is the very foundation of Skoura’s palm grove. In certain parts of the oasis it is still possible to observe the ancient irrigation networks that continue to feed the gardens today. Channels, water-distribution structures and underground galleries all attest to a form of know-how developed over centuries to sustain life in an arid land.

Visiting the khettaras requires the presence of a local guide.

Traces of Jewish memory in Skoura

Skoura’s palm grove still carries visible traces of its former Jewish community, which was long woven into the economic and social fabric of the oasis. As in many oases across southeastern Morocco, Jewish communities played a significant role in trade, craftsmanship and commerce with the surrounding tribes.

Although much of this presence faded with the departures of the twentieth century, certain vestiges remain visible to the attentive visitor. These include former mellahs, former residential quarters, a Jewish cemetery and various architectural details that bear witness to this memory.

This history is a reminder that Skoura was always far more than a farming oasis. It was also a space of coexistence between Amazigh, Arab and Jewish populations, bound together by complex forms of economic, social and cultural interdependence.

Today, these often discreet traces contribute to the singular depth of Skoura. They invite a different way of looking at the oasis: behind the beauty of the palms and the kasbahs lies the memory of a shared life that has left a lasting mark on the history of southern Morocco.

Villages and traditional kasbahs

Beyond the celebrated Kasbah Amridil, Skoura’s palm grove shelters numerous traditional villages and former pisé kasbahs scattered throughout the gardens. Following the oasis tracks, the visitor gradually uncovers this earthen architecture — testimony to the ancient organisation of oasis life, balancing shelter, agriculture and defence. Some kasbahs appear at the bend of a canal or behind a curtain of palms, offering at every turn a new way of reading the landscape.

Getting to Skoura

From Ouarzazate

Skoura lies approximately 40 km east of Ouarzazate, along the national road N10 towards Tinghir and Errachidia. The drive takes around 40 to 45 minutes and presents no particular difficulty.

Shared taxis (grands taxis) are also available from Ouarzazate’s central station.

From Marrakech

From Marrakech, allow approximately 4.5 to 5 hours by road, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass, continuing through Ouarzazate and then east along the N10 to Skoura. This stage fits naturally into a broader itinerary through the oases and valleys of southern Morocco.

Getting around the palm grove

A car gives easy access to Skoura, though some tracks inside the palm grove are narrow or unpaved. To explore the most rewarding areas — kasbahs, gardens and traditional irrigation systems — travelling on foot, by bicycle or with a local guide is often the better choice.

The palm grove is large and it is easy to lose your way. A guide is strongly recommended. Cycling is an excellent way to get around.

Beyond Skoura

Skoura’s palm grove is only one doorway into the fascinating world of southeastern Morocco’s oases. Other oases, each with their own distinct character, punctuate the valleys and foothills of the Atlas: the Fint oasis with its striking mineral landscapes, Agdz and the Drâa Valley with its immense palm groves, and further south Zagora, a former caravan staging post at the edge of the desert.

Why visit Telouet kasbah ?

Discover one of southern Morocco’s most distinctive palaces

Telouet Kasbah was not built according to a single architectural plan. It developed through successive extensions constructed between the nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth century around a number of earlier buildings. Construction of the main complex is generally thought to have begun in the 1860s, followed by several periods of expansion led by different members of the Glaoui family.

At its height, the complex served many different purposes. It contained the family residence, reception rooms, an administrative centre, a court, military quarters, stables, storerooms, servants’ accommodation and buildings intended for travellers and representatives of the authorities.

Telouet was therefore closer to a small palatial town than to the simple fortified residence that the word “kasbah” might suggest.

Observe the meeting of two architectural traditions

The oldest sections use the materials and architectural principles of the High Atlas: thick walls, stone, earth, defensive structures and towers overlooking the surrounding landscape.

The later palatial wings reflect a very different ambition. The Glaoui employed craftsmen capable of recreating the elaborate decoration of Morocco’s imperial palaces: geometric zellij, finely carved plasterwork, sculpted wooden doors, painted ceilings, columns, polylobed arches and muqarnas.

Architecture became a political language. The purpose was no longer simply to protect a residence, but to impress visitors and make the power of its owners visible.

Experience the contrast between splendour and ruin

Few monuments in Morocco offer such a powerful contrast. From the outside, the fractured structures, breached walls and weakened towers suggest a world that has collapsed. Inside, several rooms have preserved decoration of a quality comparable to that found in some of Marrakech’s finest palaces.

This coexistence of splendour and disappearance has become the defining character of Telouet. It should not, however, make us forget the extreme vulnerability of earthen architecture, further weakened by abandonment, severe weather and the earthquake of 2023.

Understanding the history of the Glaoui family

Telouet, a strategic passage through the Atlas

Before the construction of the modern road over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the routes through Telouet formed one of the principal links between Marrakech and the pre-Saharan valleys. Caravans, the armies of the Makhzen, travellers and goods all crossed the Atlas through these mountain passages.

The presence of nearby salt deposits further increased the economic importance of the area. Control over the passes, markets, taxes and movement of goods contributed to the wealth of the local rulers.

Telouet was therefore not an isolated palace in the mountains. It stood at the centre of a network connecting Marrakech with the Drâa, Dadès, Todgha and Tafilalet valleys, as well as the old trans-Saharan trade routes.

The turning point of 1893

In the autumn of 1893, Sultan Hassan I was returning from a long expedition to the Tafilalet when a snowstorm brought his army to a standstill in the Telouet region. Madani El Glaoui mobilised the resources of his territory to shelter and supply the royal court and troops for several weeks.

This hospitality decisively strengthened his relationship with the central authorities. Hassan I granted him responsibility over extensive territories and supplied him with modern weapons, including the famous Krupp cannon now associated with the rise of Glaoui power.

The influence of the Glaoui did not emerge overnight. The events of 1893 nevertheless gave Madani the political and military means to expand his authority rapidly.

From Madani to Thami El Glaoui

Madani El Glaoui was the true architect of the family’s expansion. He became one of the leading dignitaries of the Makhzen and eventually served as Minister of War and then Grand Vizier under Moulay Abdelhafid.

His younger brother Thami continued this rise to power. Appointed Pasha of Marrakech, he became one of Morocco’s most powerful figures during the French Protectorate. He owned extensive land, controlled numerous economic activities and maintained close relationships with the colonial authorities and prominent foreign visitors.

This power, however, rested on an authoritarian system. The taxes, forced labour, imprisonment and military interventions imposed upon local populations should not be hidden behind the romantic expression “Lords of the Atlas”.

The fall of a world

During the early 1950s, Thami El Glaoui openly opposed Sultan Mohammed V and supported the manoeuvres that led to the sovereign’s exile in 1953. The Sultan’s triumphant return in November 1955 marked the definitive end of Glaoui power.

Thami El Glaoui submitted to the Sultan and died only a few weeks later, in January 1956. Telouet Kasbah was subsequently abandoned and looted before gradually falling into ruin.

Telouet thus became an almost perfect symbol of the disappearance of the caidal system: an immense and still sumptuously decorated palace, deprived of the power that had brought it into existence.

What to see at Telouet Kasbah

The walls and successive layers of the palace

Before entering, take time to observe the entire complex from the outside. The buildings do not present a single orderly façade. Towers, defensive walls, terraces and ruined wings overlap, reflecting the different periods of construction.

This apparent confusion helps visitors understand how the kasbah developed alongside the growing power of the family. Each generation enlarged, altered or embellished the residence.

The reception rooms

The most remarkable spaces are the former ceremonial reception rooms. Their walls are covered with zellij, while the upper sections combine carved plasterwork, calligraphic inscriptions, plant motifs and geometric compositions.

The painted wooden ceilings, carved doors and precisely assembled floors demonstrate the skill of highly specialised craftsmen.

It is important to remember that the entire palace has not survived in this condition. The rooms currently accessible represent only a small part of the original complex.

The courtyards and galleries

The inner courtyards connected the different parts of the residence and organised movement between private, administrative and ceremonial spaces.

The openings between the reception rooms now create striking perspectives. They also reveal how power was staged through architecture: a succession of doors, changing light and a gradual progression towards the most richly decorated spaces.

The ruined sections of the kasbah

Some areas have completely collapsed or remain closed to visitors. They should not be regarded simply as a picturesque backdrop. Earthen walls can weaken rapidly, and the damage caused by the earthquake is still clearly visible.

Remain within the authorised visitor routes and do not cross barriers or enter closed areas.

How to get to Telouet Kasbah

From Ouarzazate

The most rewarding route follows the road towards Aït Ben Haddou and then continues through the Ounila Valley. From Ouarzazate, take the road towards Marrakech before turning towards Aït Ben Haddou. Beyond the ksar, the P1506 climbs through the valley, passing Tamdakhte and Anmiter before reaching Telouet.

The journey covers approximately 76 kilometres, but deserves a full day. Earthen villages, cultivated terraces, rock formations and ancient fortifications are all an essential part of the experience.

From Marrakech

From Marrakech, follow the N9 towards the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and Ouarzazate. After crossing the pass, take the turning signposted for Telouet and the Ounila Valley.

Telouet can be visited as a stop before continuing towards Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. This alternative is slower than the direct main road, but considerably richer in terms of scenery and cultural heritage.

By public transport

Shared transport services are available, but they remain irregular and are not well suited to an excursion combining Telouet, the Ounila Valley and Aït Ben Haddou in a single day.

A car, a private taxi hired for the day or an excursion with a driver will offer much greater freedom. Road conditions should be checked in winter and after periods of heavy rain.

Where to stay in Telouet

Telouet has a small number of simple inns and guesthouses located in the village or its immediate surroundings. Staying overnight allows visitors to experience the kasbah and village after the day visitors have left, while also providing more time to explore the Ounila Valley.

Accommodation remains limited and availability may vary according to the season. Booking in advance is recommended, particularly in winter. Check whether heating is available and whether dinner can be provided at the property.

Travellers looking for a wider choice of accommodation can stay in Aït Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate and visit Telouet during a day trip through the Ounila Valley.

Beyond Telouet Kasbah

Travel through the Ounila Valley

The Ounila Valley naturally connects Telouet with Aït Ben Haddou. The road passes through a mountain landscape gradually shaped by cultivated terraces, earthen villages and former Glaoui strongholds.

This is far more than a secondary road. It reveals the relationship between the High Atlas passes, the southern valleys and the old trade routes.

Visit Anmiter, the village painted by Jacques Majorelle

On the road between Telouet and Aït Ben Haddou, Anmiter is one of the most remarkable earthen villages in the Ounila Valley. Jacques Majorelle stayed there during his 1921 journey through the Glaoui territories and made the village one of the major subjects of his work. Its kasbahs, terraces and landscapes appear in several of his paintings, and some of the original viewpoints can still be recognised today.

The paintings created during this expedition were exhibited in Paris in 1922, and Majorelle later returned to the valley several times. The house in which he stayed also preserves small wall paintings attributed to him.

Anmiter reveals another side of Majorelle: not simply the creator of Marrakech’s famous garden, but a painter of earthen architecture and High Atlas landscapes.

Stop in Tamdakhte

Tamdakhte was once an important fortified centre between Telouet and Aït Ben Haddou. Its history is closely connected with the expansion of Madani El Glaoui’s power at the end of the nineteenth century.

Its large earthen buildings, now partly ruined, extend the historical narrative of the valley and demonstrate that Glaoui power depended upon an entire network of kasbahs and command posts.

Continue to Aït Ben Haddou

Approximately 47 kilometres from Telouet, Aït Ben Haddou forms the natural continuation of the journey. The two sites complement one another particularly well:

• Telouet tells the story of the power exercised by a family of caids;
• Aït Ben Haddou reveals the organisation of a fortified community;
• the Ounila Valley connects the two monuments through both geography and history.

Telouet should therefore not be presented as a rival to Aït Ben Haddou, but as the second half of the same great heritage route.

Why visit M’Hamid El Ghizlane?

Discover the last oasis of the Drâa Valley

M’Hamid stands at the southern end of the oasis system that stretches along the middle Drâa Valley.

From Agdz onwards, the Drâa runs through a succession of palm groves, cultivated gardens and earthen villages. At M’Hamid, this long ribbon of vegetation gradually comes to an end. The riverbed, usually dry at the surface, turns westwards, while cultivated land becomes scarcer and sand begins to spread between the palms.

M’Hamid is therefore more than a settlement built on the edge of the desert. It is the southernmost part of the middle Drâa oasis system, where irrigated agriculture has become particularly vulnerable to water scarcity, advancing sand and soil degradation.

This fragility is part of what visitors encounter. Isolated palm trees, abandoned plots and partially collapsed earthen walls are not merely picturesque features. They reveal the profound transformations affecting the oases of southern Morocco.

The name El Ghizlane comes from the Arabic al-ghizlān, the plural of ghazāl, meaning “gazelle”. M’Hamid El Ghizlane can therefore be understood as “M’Hamid of the Gazelles”, a name traditionally associated with the gazelles that once roamed the surrounding desert plains.

Understand a former caravan crossroads

Before motor vehicles replaced the great camel caravans, M’Hamid occupied a strategic position on the trans-Saharan routes.

People, animals and goods gathered here before continuing south across the Sahara or entering the Drâa Valley on their way to the markets of northern Morocco.

These routes connected Morocco with regions south of the Sahara, historically known as the Bilad al-Sudan. They carried goods, but also stories, languages, music and social practices. The cultural diversity of the oasis developed through encounters between oasis communities and Amazigh, Arab, Saharan and sub-Saharan populations.

The ruins of Ksebt El Allouj, commonly attributed to the Saadian period in the late 16th century, are associated with this period of trans-Saharan trade. Their exact function remains imperfectly documented, but the site recalls the historical importance of M’Hamid on the routes linking the Drâa Valley with the lands beyond the Sahara.

A landmark in Morocco’s modern history

M’Hamid also occupies a particular place in the modern history of Morocco.

On 25 February 1958, two years after independence, King Mohammed V met representatives of Saharan tribes in M’Hamid and delivered a speech concerning the country’s territorial unity and the future of its southern regions.

This event gave the remote oasis a political and symbolic importance far greater than its geographical size might suggest.

What to do in M’Hamid El Ghizlane

Walk between M’Hamid Jdid and the old village

Walking from M’Hamid Jdid towards M’Hamid Bali is one of the best ways to understand the oasis beyond its modern roadside centre.

M’Hamid Jdid, the new village, contains most of the shops, cafés, accommodation and agencies organising desert excursions. To discover a different side of the settlement, leave the main road and walk towards M’Hamid Bali, the old village.

Its earthen buildings, narrow passages and gradually abandoned houses offer a glimpse of the oasis’s former organisation. Some areas remain inhabited or belong to local families, so visitors should remain discreet and respect private life.

The walk is particularly pleasant in the late afternoon, when the light brings out the texture of the earthen walls and temperatures begin to fall.

Explore the palm grove

The palm grove connects the oasis’s different settlements and old fortified villages.

Along its paths, you will encounter date palms, small cultivated plots, irrigation channels, tamarisk trees and areas already invaded by sand.

Walking through the palm grove helps visitors understand how a traditional oasis functions. It is not a naturally green landscape, but an environment created and maintained by generations of inhabitants, dependent on a delicate balance between water, crops, trees and human settlement.

A satellite-based study covering the period from 1984 to 2016 identified a marked long-term reduction in the vegetated area of the M’Hamid oasis. Drought, declining water availability, the abandonment of farmland, migration and certain forms of tourism development have all contributed to its transformation.

Explore the old ksour

Several old ksour — fortified earthen villages — are scattered across the wider M’Hamid oasis.

The area is not limited to M’Hamid Jdid and M’Hamid Bali. It also includes older settlements such as Bounou and Ouled Driss.

Their earthen houses, covered lanes and shared spaces reflect forms of architecture adapted to extreme heat, wind and the scarcity of building materials. Much of this heritage is now severely degraded, although local initiatives have attempted to restore buildings and maintain life within some of the old villages.

A local guide can help identify the different settlements, avoid entering private property and provide a clearer understanding of their history.

See the ruins of Ksebt El Allouj

Ksebt El Allouj is one of the main historical remains in the M’Hamid oasis.

Situated away from the modern centre, its ruins are generally dated to the Saadian period and associated with the control of caravan routes.

Do not expect a restored monument. Much of the earthen structure has collapsed, and the site has few visitor facilities. Its interest lies in its position, its earthen architecture and what it suggests about M’Hamid’s former role.

Because the remains are fragile and signage is limited, it is preferable to visit with a local resident or guide.

Reach the first dunes

You do not need to travel as far as Erg Chigaga to encounter your first sandy landscapes.

Small dunes lie around the edges of the oasis and can be reached on foot or during a short camel ride. They are especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

These dunes are modest in scale, but their proximity to palm trees and earthen houses creates a landscape characteristic of M’Hamid, suspended between oasis and desert.

They provide a rewarding introduction for travellers with limited time. They should not, however, be confused with the much larger dune systems found farther to the south-west.

Travel to Erg Chigaga

Erg Chigaga — also written Erg Chegaga — lies approximately 50 to 60 kilometres from M’Hamid.

There is no paved road to the dunes. The journey follows tracks across stony plains, sandy areas and a succession of desert landscapes.

The trip usually takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and two hours in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, depending on the condition of the tracks and the location of the camp. It can also be undertaken over several days on foot or with a camel caravan.

Do not attempt this journey alone. Tracks can change, landmarks are scarce and mobile communications cannot always be relied upon. Travelling with an experienced local guide also helps avoid unnecessary and damaging vehicle movements through a particularly fragile environment.

A guide is essential.

Spend a night in the desert

A night in the desert allows you to watch the sunset, experience the Saharan night sky and discover the extraordinary scale of its silence.

Several types of experience are available: a camp close to M’Hamid, a fixed camp in the surrounding desert or a more remote stay among the dunes of Erg Chigaga. The right choice depends on the time available and the level of comfort you require.

Before booking, ask how the camp manages water, waste and sanitation. A responsible desert camp should employ local guides and staff, limit unnecessary motorised journeys and leave the site clean after its guests have departed.

Experience nomadic cultures during the festivals

M’Hamid hosts several events devoted to Saharan and nomadic cultures.

The International Nomads Festival brings together music, talks, crafts, oral traditions and activities connected with nomadic life. The Taragalte Festival, founded in 2009, combines concerts, poetry, cultural encounters and reflection on desert culture and the environment.

More recently, the Zamane Festival has highlighted the musical traditions of southern Morocco, the biodiversity of the oasis and initiatives led by local communities.

Festival dates change from year to year, so always consult the official programmes before planning your journey. The International Nomads Festival continues to be held annually in M’Hamid, while the third Zamane Festival took place in late 2024.

How do you get to M’Hamid El Ghizlane?

From Zagora

M’Hamid lies approximately 95 kilometres south of Zagora.

The N9 passes through Tamegroute, the Fezouata palm grove, Tagounite and the increasingly arid landscapes of the lower Drâa Valley.

The journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, although it would be a pity to make it without stopping. Tamegroute, the old ksour and the viewpoints over the valley all deserve some time.

Coaches, minibuses and shared grand taxis usually operate between Zagora and M’Hamid. As timetables can change, check locally before departure.

From Ouarzazate

M’Hamid is approximately 260 kilometres from Ouarzazate, representing nearly four hours of driving without stops.

From Agdz, the road follows the Drâa Valley, passes through Zagora and continues to its terminus at M’Hamid. It is a long journey, but one that reveals the gradual transformation of the region’s oasis landscapes.

For a more comfortable visit, plan an overnight stop in Agdz, Zagora or one of the valley’s palm groves rather than attempting a return journey from Ouarzazate in a single day.

From Marrakech

M’Hamid can be reached from Marrakech through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, Ouarzazate, Agdz and Zagora.

The complete journey represents a very long day on the road. To experience the Drâa Valley properly, divide it over two days and plan at least one additional night in M’Hamid or the desert.

Getting around M’Hamid

The centre of M’Hamid and the nearby sections of the palm grove can easily be explored on foot.

A car, bicycle or local guide may be useful for reaching the older settlements scattered across the oasis.

Journeys beyond the oasis require a suitable vehicle and a driver familiar with the desert tracks. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is not a substitute for local knowledge, preparation or desert safety precautions.

Where to stay in M’Hamid El Ghizlane?

Staying overnight in M’Hamid allows you to enjoy the cooler morning temperatures, walk through the palm grove before the heat becomes intense and begin a desert excursion without first driving from Zagora.

The centre of M’Hamid Jdid offers the most practical options, close to shops, cafés and transport.

Accommodation around the palm grove, Bounou or Ouled Driss generally provides a quieter setting and a closer connection with the region’s earthen architecture.

A third option is to stay in a camp close to the oasis. This is suitable for a first desert experience or a short stay. To discover the larger dune landscapes, choose a more remote camp towards Erg Chigaga and allow at least two days for the excursion.

Beyond M’Hamid El Ghizlane

M’Hamid is the natural conclusion of a journey following the Drâa Valley southwards from Agdz and Zagora.

On the road back towards Zagora, Tamegroute deserves a stop for its zaouia, historic library and pottery workshops. The village maintains a long ceramic tradition, recognisable by its irregular shades of green glaze. Some workshops welcome visitors and may offer introductory sessions or longer courses.

The old villages of the valley, the ksar of Tissergate and the Zagora palm grove continue this exploration of oasis cultures.

In the opposite direction, the paved road ends at M’Hamid. Desert tracks lead towards Erg Chigaga, the landscapes around Iriqui and, on longer crossings, Foum Zguid. These routes must be organised with professionals who know the terrain.

M’Hamid should therefore not be seen merely as a departure point for a night under canvas. The village forms the final chapter of a valley shaped by water and agriculture, but also the first chapter of a world in which distances, movement and ways of life belong to a different geography.

Why visit Aït Ben Haddou ?

Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar: a fortified village made up of family homes, lanes, towers, defensive walls and communal spaces. It is therefore not a single kasbah, although this confusion remains common.

Built on high ground overlooking the riverbed and cultivated land, the village occupied a favourable position along an old route connecting the pre-Saharan regions with Marrakesh. It served at once as a place of residence, protection, storage and passage.

Its architecture combines rammed earth, unfired mud brick, timber and traditional rendering. The houses rise gradually up the hillside and are connected by narrow, sometimes covered lanes. This dense organisation responded both to the demands of the climate and to the practical needs of community life.

The ksar’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, followed by its use as a filming location, contributed greatly to its international fame. Its true richness, however, lies in the insight it provides into an older way of inhabiting and organising the land.

What to do in Aït Ben Haddou?

Enter by the pedestrian bridge or through the gardens

Two public routes lead into the ksar. The pedestrian bridge provides the most direct approach and the best-known view of the village. The path through the gardens reveals more gradually the relationship between the riverbed, cultivated land and earthen houses.

Taking one route on the way in and the other on the way back allows you to discover two complementary sides of the site.

Explore the lanes of the ksar

The visit continues through a network of narrow lanes, covered passages and small squares. Take the time to observe the doors, earthen walls, timber ceilings and openings overlooking the valley.

Several families also welcome visitors into their homes. These houses provide a better understanding of the internal organisation of traditional dwellings, while the entrance fees contribute directly to the maintenance of the heritage site.

Climb to the summit

The climb leads to the site of the former communal granary. From this high point, the layout of the village becomes easier to understand: the tightly grouped houses, defensive walls, gardens, riverbed and modern village on the opposite bank.

The path is uneven and offers little shade. It is best to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

Visit the Maison de l’Oralité

Housed in a restored residence, the Maison de l’Oralité presents the region’s oral traditions, local skills and Amazigh carpet-making heritage.

Still relatively little known, it offers a particularly interesting cultural perspective and allows visitors to look beyond the monument’s appearance alone.

Walk along the riverbed

The path below the village offers another perspective on the ksar and its agricultural surroundings. This walk is especially pleasant in the morning or when the late-afternoon light brings out the shapes and volumes of the buildings.

Near the pedestrian bridge, the Tawesna garden, run by a women’s cooperative from the village, provides a shaded setting in which to stop for tea or a meal.

Take a break at Tawesna restaurant

Located in a garden at the entrance to the ksar, Tawesna serves home-style cooking inspired by the region’s Amazigh culinary traditions. Its name means “know-how” in the local language.

The restaurant is run by a cooperative of women from Aït Ben Haddou. Beyond serving meals, this community-based initiative allows them to make use of their knowledge, develop an economic activity and participate fully in village life.

Getting to Aït Ben Haddou

From Ouarzazate

Aït Ben Haddou lies approximately 30 kilometres from Ouarzazate. Follow the N9 national road towards Marrakesh, then turn off at Tabourahte onto the P1506 provincial road. The final seven kilometres lead directly to the village.

The journey takes around 40 minutes. Shared taxis also travel to Aït Ben Haddou, generally with a change at Tabourahte.

From Marrakech

Aït Ben Haddou lies approximately 180 kilometres from Marrakesh, with a driving time of between three and a half and four hours.

The most direct route follows the N9 over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. A more rewarding alternative passes through Telouet and crosses the Ounila valley before reaching Aït Ben Haddou.

Getting around once you arrive

The ksar is explored entirely on foot. Its lanes and the climb towards the summit can be steep and uneven, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Where should you stay in Aït Ben Haddou?

Staying overnight allows you to discover the ksar before the day excursions arrive or after they have left. A small number of guesthouses are located inside the fortified village or directly opposite the site.

The surrounding villages offer a quieter atmosphere while remaining only a few minutes from Aït Ben Haddou. Travellers seeking a stay more closely connected with the landscapes, walking and local culture can also choose a guesthouse in the Ounila valley.

Beyond Aït Ben Haddou

A visit to Aït Ben Haddou can be extended into the Ounila valley, one of the most remarkable routes in the region.

Travelling north towards Telouet, the road passes through mountain landscapes, gardens and several earthen villages. It eventually reaches the former Glaoui kasbah, whose decorated rooms bear witness to the past power of this family of influential caïds.

In the opposite direction, Ouarzazate offers the kasbah of Taourirt and the film studios. Fint oasis presents another side of the region, where a river, palm trees and villages meet beneath the surrounding hills.

Aït Ben Haddou should therefore not be regarded simply as a photographic stop, but as the starting point for a broader exploration of the Ounila valley and the southern High Atlas.
